Dave Goldstein has been been blowing glass for easily four decades. He was even a personal friend to Captain Ed himself! That's what he told us when we met him at the American Glass Expo in Las Vegas. He also told us had a back ground in laboratory glass blowing and noticed that none of the "functional" smoke wear was really as functional as true laboratory glass equipment. So he set out with one goal in mind, to make smoke wear that was laboratory grade. Dave had knowledge of fritted glass scrubbers used to scrub gasses with liquids from his time spent at University of Maryland’s technical glass shop in 1980-81. A fritted glass disc is a "disc" of crushed glass all fused together. Gasses or in this case smoke, that passes through the gaps in the crushed glass is scrubbed and cleaned. The only problem was, none of fritted discs available functioned at lung pressure. Through trial and error he was able to create a fritted disc coarse enough to function at lung pressure and completed his first prototype in April 2011. After realizing how innovative and functional it was, he filed for a patent in December 2011. If you have never had the pleasure of using one of these, you are missing out!
